What Is EcoVadis? Ratings, Medals and Scores Explained

EcoVadis is a business sustainability rating. You complete an online questionnaire and upload evidence, and EcoVadis analysts score your company from 0 to 100 across four themes: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. Large buyers use the scorecard to assess suppliers, and the strongest performers earn a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum medal.

Why you have probably been asked for one

Most companies start EcoVadis because a customer asked. Procurement teams at large companies use the platform to screen suppliers, and the request usually lands during a tender or a contract renewal. Some buyers go further and set a floor, such as a medal or a minimum score, before they will sign. One assessment serves every customer. Once you are rated, any buyer who requests your scorecard through the platform can see it, so the work pays off more than once.

    How the EcoVadis score works

The questionnaire is tailored to your industry, your size and the countries you operate in. EcoVadis has 21 sustainability criteria and switches on only the ones relevant to your business. Analysts then score your evidence in three layers: the policies you have, the actions you take to put them into practice, and the results you report. A policy with nothing behind it scores poorly. So does good work you cannot document. Your overall score falls into one of five bands.

    The four themes

Every company is scored on the same four themes. What changes is the weighting, which depends on your industry and size.

    Medals and badges

Medals are awarded by percentile, ranked against every company EcoVadis rated in the previous 12 months. No fixed score guarantees a medal, and a score below 30 in any single theme rules you out entirely. Two badges sit alongside the medals. Committed goes to companies scoring 45 or more. Fast Mover recognises companies scoring 34 to 44 that improved by at least 6 points within 18 months.

    Is EcoVadis a certification?

Strictly, no. EcoVadis is a rating, reassessed each year, and people call it a certification out of habit. The distinction matters because a rating moves: your medal depends on how other companies score as well as on your own work.

    Time and cost

The slow part is gathering evidence. Policies, HR data, energy figures and supplier information usually sit with different people, and pulling them together takes most teams several weeks. EcoVadis charges an annual subscription that depends on the plan and your company size. Third-party estimates put it between roughly €1,000 and €8,000 a year; check the current price with EcoVadis.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is EcoVadis mandatory?

No law requires an EcoVadis rating. It becomes mandatory in practice when a customer makes it a condition of a contract or tender.

    Who sees my EcoVadis scorecard?

Customers who request your rating through the EcoVadis platform. You can also share your medal publicly, linking to your EcoVadis recognition page.

What is a good EcoVadis score?

45 or above puts you in the Good band and earns the Committed badge. Whether that wins a medal depends on how you rank against everyone rated in the last 12 months.

    How often is EcoVadis reassessed?

Ratings are reassessed annually. Buyers generally expect a current scorecard, so plan your evidence gathering around that cycle.

Can a small company get an EcoVadis rating?

Yes. The questionnaire scales to company size, and smaller companies are expected to have less formal systems than large ones.

How long does an EcoVadis assessment take?

Gathering policies and data usually takes several weeks. Analyst review follows once you submit, so allow a couple of months end to end for a first assessment.

What happens if I score badly?

Your scorecard lists strengths and improvement areas for each theme. Fix those gaps, document the fixes, and your next assessment should reflect them.

How can Ella help with EcoVadis?

Ella reads your scorecard, shows exactly where you lost points, then does the fixes: drafting missing policies, collecting evidence from colleagues and preparing questionnaire answers for your review.
