How to Improve Your EcoVadis Score

Start with the scorecard from your last assessment. Most lost points come from documentation: policies with no evidence of action behind them, no quantitative KPIs, no public reporting and no certifications. Fix the gaps your scorecard flags, back every claim with a dated, specific document, then submit for reassessment.

    Read your scorecard properly

Your EcoVadis scorecard gives a score for each theme plus a list of strengths and improvement areas. The improvement areas are the closest thing you will get to a marking scheme. Each one maps to a criterion, and each criterion is scored across policies, actions and results. Work theme by theme. A single weak theme can cost you a medal outright, because any theme scored under 30 rules you out regardless of your overall score.

    Where companies lose points

Across the scorecards we review, the same gaps come up again and again. Companies are usually doing more than they get credit for. They lose points because they cannot prove it.

    A six-step improvement plan

    1. List every improvement area on your scorecard and group them by theme. 2. Fix the weakest theme first, especially anything near 30. 3. For each policy, add proof that it is used: a procedure, a training log, a review date. 4. Start measuring. Even one year of energy, emissions and HR data scores better than none. 5. Close the quick wins: an endorsement, a supplier code of conduct, a whistleblowing channel. 6. Upload documents that are dated, signed and specific to your company, then submit for reassessment.

    The percentile trap

Medals are ranked against everyone rated in the previous 12 months. If the rest of the market improves and you stand still, you can keep exactly the same score and drop a medal. Treat each reassessment as a chance to move up, because standing still means slipping.

    How long it takes

Policies and action documents count as evidence for up to eight years, while KPI and reporting data must be from the last two years. Plan improvements so new data exists before you submit. Most teams need several weeks to close the gaps and gather proof, so start well before your reassessment date.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I improve my EcoVadis score?

Documentation fixes can show up at your next assessment. Results-based points take longer, because you need data covering a real reporting period.

What is the fastest EcoVadis quick win?

Tidying evidence. Dated, signed, company-specific documents in place of generic templates often recover points without any new activity.

Does ISO 14001 improve my EcoVadis score?

Yes. Certified management systems such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 are strong evidence under the actions layer.

Does joining the UN Global Compact help?

Endorsements of recognised initiatives are scored, so signing up to the UN Global Compact or similar can add points, provided you follow through.

Can I appeal my EcoVadis score?

You can raise questions about your scorecard with EcoVadis. In practice, improving the evidence for your next assessment is usually more productive.

Why did my medal drop when my score did not?

Medals are percentile-based. If other companies improved more than you did, your ranking falls even if your score stays the same.

How much evidence do I need?

Enough to prove each claim: a policy, proof it is applied, and a measured result. One strong, specific document beats several generic ones.

Can software improve my EcoVadis score?

Software cannot change the methodology, but it can do the work. Ella reads your scorecard, drafts missing policies, collects evidence from colleagues and prepares answers for your review.
