EU AI Act

    Ella is an AI agent built to help companies do sustainability, carbon, and compliance work. We take the EU AI Act seriously and have classified Ella's risk tier, mapped our obligations, and built our product accordingly.

    What the EU AI Act is

    The EU AI Act is the European Union's law regulating artificial intelligence systems. It came into force in August 2024 and applies in phases through to 2028. It classifies AI systems into four risk tiers — prohibited, high-risk, limited risk, and minimal risk — with different obligations for each.

    The Act applies to any AI system placed on the EU market or whose outputs are used in the EU, regardless of where the provider is based.

    Ella's risk classification

    Ella is classified as a limited-risk AI system under the EU AI Act.

    Ella assists with administrative ESG workflows: drafting policies, calculating carbon emissions, answering sustainability questionnaires, collecting supplier data, and producing reports. It produces draft outputs that human users review, edit, and approve before any decision is made or action is taken.

    Ella does not make automated decisions about individuals. It is not used in any of the high-risk categories defined in Annex III of the Act:

    • Employment, worker management, or access to self-employment
    • Access to essential services such as credit, healthcare, or public benefits
    • Education and vocational training admissions or assessments
    • Law enforcement, migration, border control, or administration of justice
    • Biometric identification or categorisation
    • Critical infrastructure management
    • Democratic processes and elections

    Ella is also not embedded in any regulated product covered by Annex I (medical devices, vehicles, machinery, or similar).

    This classification reflects Ella's intended use. Customers who deploy Ella in ways that materially differ from its intended use are responsible for assessing their own classification and obligations as deployers under the Act.

    Our obligations as a limited-risk provider

    From 2 August 2026, providers of limited-risk AI systems are subject to transparency obligations under Article 50 of the Act. Ella meets these as follows:

    • Users know they are interacting with AI. Ella is openly marketed and presented as an AI agent. Every interface makes the AI nature of the system clear.
    • AI-generated content is identifiable. Where Ella produces draft documents, emails, or report sections, this content is marked as AI-generated and presented for human review before use.
    • Human-in-the-loop is built into the product. Ella drafts, suggests, and accelerates. Users review, edit, and approve. No output goes anywhere without a human reviewing it.
    • AI literacy. Our team maintains internal training on the AI systems we build and deploy. We support customers with documentation and onboarding so their teams understand how Ella works.

    Underlying AI models

    Ella uses foundation models from leading AI providers, including Anthropic and OpenAI, via their APIs. These providers are subject to the Act's separate obligations for General-Purpose AI models, which came into effect in August 2025. We do not train, fine-tune, or modify these models. Customer data is not used to train any underlying model.

    Data handling

    Ella processes the data customers upload to operate the workflows they configure. We do not use customer data to train AI models. Data is processed in line with GDPR. Full details are in our Privacy Policy, Data Processing Addendum, and Security pages.

    Monitoring and reclassification

    The EU AI Act is a living regulation. The Commission can update delegated acts, classification thresholds, and technical standards. We monitor regulatory developments and review Ella's classification on an ongoing basis. If the Act's interpretation changes in a way that affects Ella's tier or obligations, we will update this page and notify customers.
