Best ESG Software in 2026: 11 Platforms Compared

The best ESG software depends on who is asking you for data. Workiva and Sweep suit enterprises filing CSRD or ISSB reports. Watershed and Persefoni suit carbon-heavy enterprises. Ella suits sustainability teams handling EcoVadis, CDP, SECR and customer requests: AI-native ESG software that collects, cleans and reports your data for you.

    How we compared them

We make Ella, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be fair: every platform here is good at something, and several will suit you better than Ella does. We judged each one on five things: which frameworks it covers, how data gets in, how much of the work it does for you, who it is built for, and how quickly a busy sustainability team can get value from it.

    The short list

Eleven platforms, what each one is best for and where it is strongest. Use it to build a shortlist of two or three, then test them against your own data.

Our view: buy for the work, not the dashboard

Most ESG software organises your data once it exists. The hard part, even in a company of several thousand people, is getting it in the first place: chasing energy bills across sites, HR figures, supplier answers and signed policies, then turning them into the exact format EcoVadis, CDP or a customer wants. When you shortlist, ask each vendor one question: after setup, who does the work each month? If the answer is your sustainability team, you are buying a better spreadsheet. Most ESG platforms still depend on manual entry and uploads. Sustainability teams are small relative to the requests they handle, so the tools that win are the ones that take work off them.

Data collection is where ESG projects stall

Ask any sustainability lead where the time goes and the answer is rarely the report. It is the weeks spent emailing site managers for meter readings, waiting on HR for headcount data, and retyping figures from PDFs. Collection is also where the audit trail breaks, because numbers arrive by email and lose their source. This is the part we built Ella around. In practice, good data collection software should:

    Test it before procurement

More buyers now want to use a tool before it goes through supplier onboarding, and a short trial tells you more than any demo. In one week you should be able to answer: can it read our invoices and utility bills, can it send data requests to colleagues, and does the output match what EcoVadis or CDP actually asks for?

Questions to ask in every demo

    1. Which frameworks are covered today, not on the roadmap? 2. How does data get in: integrations, uploads or manual entry? 3. What does the software do on its own, and what does my team still do? 4. Can I trace every number back to its source document? 5. Will it chase my colleagues for data automatically, or does my team do the chasing? 6. Where is my data hosted, and is it used to train models? 7. Can my team use it from the AI tools we already have, such as Copilot, ChatGPT or Claude? 8. Can we trial it before procurement, and what does it cost all in?

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best ESG software in 2026?

There is no single best. Workiva and Sweep suit large enterprises filing CSRD or ISSB reports, Watershed and Persefoni suit carbon-heavy enterprises, and Ella suits sustainability teams who need the evidence work done for EcoVadis, CDP and SECR.

What is the best ESG software for large companies?

Look for multi-site data collection, an audit trail on every figure and coverage of the requests you actually receive. Workiva and Sweep suit CSRD-led reporting; Ella suits teams handling EcoVadis, CDP and customer requests at volume.

How much does ESG software cost?

Most platforms price by company size and modules, and few publish prices. Ask for an all-in quote including onboarding.

What is the easiest ESG software for data collection?

Look for software that requests and chases data from colleagues automatically, extracts figures from uploaded invoices and bills, and connects to your existing systems. Ella was built around this.

What is the difference between traditional ESG software and an AI ESG agent?

Traditional ESG software stores and reports data your team collects. AI-native ESG software such as Ella also does the work: collecting and cleaning data, drafting policies and answering questionnaires for your review.

Do I need ESG software for CSRD?

Not strictly, but most companies in scope use software to manage the data points and audit trail that CSRD requires.

    Which ESG software supports VSME?

VSME is the voluntary EU standard many companies now use to answer sustainability requests from customers, banks and investors. Ella collects the data points VSME asks for and drafts the report; Coolset also covers it.

Which ESG software helps with CDP?

Look for software that calculates Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions with traceable sources and maps them to the CDP climate questionnaire. Ella, Watershed, Persefoni and Sweep all cover CDP data.

Which ESG software is best for EcoVadis?

Choose software that reads your scorecard and produces the missing evidence. Ella was built for this workflow.

Can ESG software calculate my carbon footprint?

Most platforms here do, using spend, activity data or both. Check which emission factor databases they use and whether you can trace each figure.

    Is Ella ESG software?

Yes. Ella is ESG reporting software built as an AI agent. It covers carbon accounting (including SECR and CDP), ESG reporting (CSRD and VSME) and EcoVadis, and it also does the data collection, cleaning and drafting work your team would otherwise do.
