Best carbon accounting software in 2026: an honest comparison

The best carbon accounting software in 2026 is the one that gets real activity data out of your organisation with the least chasing, then turns it into Scope 1, 2 and 3 figures you can defend to an auditor. For large UK and EU teams, compare Ella, Greenly, Persefoni, Sweep, Watershed, Plan A and Normative on data collection first.

What is the best carbon accounting software in 2026?

There is no single winner, and any list that crowns one without asking what you report on is selling something. We make Ella, so read this with that in mind. What we have tried to do is describe each tool the way its own makers describe it, then set out the questions that separate them in a real buying process. Every platform below can calculate a Scope 1 and 2 footprint. The differences show up in three places: how the data gets in, how estimates are handled when it does not, and which reports come out the other end. If you are a sustainability team of one or two people at a large or fast-growing company, the first of those matters most, because that is where your weeks go.

What does carbon accounting software actually do?

At its core, carbon accounting software turns activity data (litres of diesel, kilowatt hours, flights, spend with suppliers) into greenhouse gas emissions using emission factors, then organises the result into Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 under the GHG Protocol. Scope 3 is the hard part. The GHG Protocol splits value chain emissions into 15 categories, from purchased goods and services to investments, and most companies find a handful of them make up the bulk of their footprint. Good software also does the boring work around the calculation: it keeps a record of where each figure came from, flags gaps, handles base year changes when you acquire or sell a business, and formats the output for the report you actually owe, whether that is SECR in an annual report, a CDP response or a carbon reduction plan for a public sector bid.

The part most demos skip: getting the data in

Most carbon software demos start with a finished dashboard. That is the easy bit. In our sales calls the questions buyers ask are almost never about charts. They ask what data they need to gather before they start, who has to log in, and what happens when the facilities manager at a site in another country does not reply. Our view is simple. If a platform needs your team to export, clean and upload every spreadsheet, you have bought a calculator with a login. The useful test is how much of the collection the software does on its own: emailing the right person for the right number, reminding them, reading a PDF energy bill dropped into a folder, and pulling data from finance or travel systems. That is the work Ella was built to take off a sustainability team, and it is the question we would ask of every tool on this list, including ours.

Estimates, data quality and confidence scores

Every first-year footprint contains estimates. Spend-based figures for purchased goods, floor-area estimates for an office where the landlord pays the bills, distance-based estimates for travel. That is normal and the GHG Protocol allows for it. What matters is whether your software shows you how much of each category is estimated, so you know where better data would change the answer. We are sceptical of single confidence percentages for a whole footprint. A headline score of 72 per cent tells a board very little. A line that says business travel is 60 per cent of your footprint and 80 per cent of it is estimated tells you exactly what to fix next year. Ask each vendor to show you that view, and ask whether you can see who submitted each data point and when.

Which reports should carbon accounting software produce?

Match the software to the reports you owe now and the ones coming next. For UK companies that list is changing: the government published the final UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS S1 and S2) on 25 February 2026 for voluntary use, with any mandatory timing still to be set, and the standards keep transitional relief for Scope 3 disclosure in place indefinitely for now.
Which reports should carbon accounting software produce?
Report or frameworkWho usually needs itWhat the software should produce
SECRQuoted companies and large unquoted UK companies and LLPsEnergy use, Scope 1 and 2 emissions, an intensity ratio and a methodology note for the directors' report
CDPCompanies asked by investors or large customers to discloseClimate questionnaire answers backed by Scope 1, 2 and 3 data and targets
Carbon reduction plan (PPN 006)Suppliers bidding for major UK central government contractsA published plan with Scope 1, 2 and Scope 3 emissions, reduction measures and a net zero commitment
UK SRS S2Voluntary today; listed companies may be brought in by the FCAClimate-related disclosures aligned to ISSB, including greenhouse gas emissions
CSRD and VSMEEU companies in scope and their value chain suppliersClimate data points (ESRS E1 or the voluntary standard) alongside wider ESG data

How to choose carbon accounting software: a demo checklist

Take one real, messy month of data into every demo. Ask the vendor to load it live rather than show a prepared account. Then work through the questions below and score each answer from one to three.

    Where Ella fits

Ella is carbon accounting software and ESG reporting software built as an AI agent. It is designed for sustainability teams at large and fast-growing companies that are short on people and long on data owners. Ella runs the collection for you: it emails colleagues for the numbers it needs, chases them, reads invoices and bills you drag in, connects to your systems and sends surveys, then cleans the data and builds audit-ready outputs with a source on every number. The Carbon module covers SECR, CDP and carbon reduction plans. The same data feeds ESG reporting for CSRD and VSME, and EcoVadis submissions. If your footprint already lives happily in one of the tools above, you may not need us. If your team spends most of its time chasing spreadsheets, book a demo and bring your messiest month.

SECR Reporting Explained: Who Must Report and What to Include

SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) requires UK quoted companies, and large unquoted companies and LLPs, to report their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in their annual report. A company is large if it meets two of three tests: turnover of £36m or more, balance sheet of £18m or more, or 250 or more employees. Scope 3 is optional.

A Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) is a short public document that suppliers bidding for UK government contracts worth over £5m a year must publish. It commits to net zero by 2050, reports Scope 1, Scope 2 and five Scope 3 categories against a baseline, lists reduction measures and is signed by a director.

CDP reporting explained: how scoring works and why the data is the hard part

CDP reporting means answering CDP's annual environmental questionnaire, usually because an investor or a large customer asked you to. Responses are scored from D- to A across four levels. In the 2026 cycle the scoring deadline was 16 September, and final responses close in the week commencing 26 October.

ESG data collection software: how to collect ESG data without chasing spreadsheets

ESG data collection software gathers the energy, emissions, workforce and governance data a sustainability report needs from the people and systems that hold it. Good tools request data from named owners, chase them, read invoices and bills, pull from integrations, and keep a source on every number so the final report is audit-ready.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best carbon accounting software for large companies?

For large companies, the best carbon accounting software is the one that automates data collection across many sites and data owners, keeps an audit trail on every number and produces the reports you owe, such as SECR, CDP and CSRD. Shortlist on data collection first, then on calculation depth and outputs.

What is the best carbon accounting software in the UK?

UK teams should prioritise SECR outputs, carbon reduction plans for PPN 006 bids and readiness for the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards. Ella, Greenly, Sweep, Watershed, Plan A, Normative and Persefoni all serve UK customers. Test each with your own data, including how it handles UK utility bills.

What does carbon accounting software do?

It converts activity data such as fuel, electricity, travel and supplier spend into greenhouse gas emissions using emission factors, sorts them into Scope 1, 2 and 3 under the GHG Protocol, tracks progress against a base year and produces reports for frameworks like SECR, CDP and CSRD.

Is carbon accounting software the same as carbon management software?

The terms overlap. Carbon accounting usually means measuring and reporting emissions, while carbon management software adds reduction planning, target tracking and supplier engagement. Most platforms on this list do both to some degree, so ask to see the reduction planning features in the demo.

Can I do carbon accounting in Excel instead of software?

You can, and many companies start there. Spreadsheets struggle once you have several sites, many data owners, Scope 3 categories and an auditor asking where each number came from. Software earns its cost when it removes the chasing and keeps the evidence trail.

How much does carbon accounting software cost?

Pricing depends on company size, number of sites, Scope 3 depth and which reporting modules you need, and most vendors quote on request. Compare the licence against the hours your team spends collecting and cleaning data today, plus any consultant fees for SECR or CDP.

Which carbon accounting software is best for Scope 3?

Look for software that supports both spend-based and activity-based methods, can request data from suppliers, and shows which of the 15 Scope 3 categories rely on estimates. The right choice depends on which categories dominate your footprint, so map those first.

Can AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot do carbon accounting?

General AI assistants can explain methods and draft text, but they cannot chase colleagues for meter readings, hold an auditable record of every data point or keep emission factors current on their own. AI-native carbon accounting software such as Ella builds those workflows in.
